John Mateer and Oklahoma picked up a win against Mississippi State on Saturday, as the Sooners escaped Starkville with a 23-15 victory. Mateer posted one of the best games of his career at Oklahoma, finishing 22-of-29 for 283 yards and 2 touchdowns. More importantly, he avoided the costly mistake that has doomed him during his time as the quarterback in Norman.
After the game, Mateer talked about a moment the night before that helped him get through the tough times.
“I woke up in the middle of the night and something told me, ‘forgive yourself.’ Real powerful stuff,” Mateer said. “All day, I just thought, the least important thing is what just happened. The next play is the focus.”
With the win, the Sooners moved to 4-3 on the season. It will take a lot for the Sooners to get back in the College Football Playoff, but there are still plenty of big games for the Sooners with three games remaining on the schedule against teams ranked in the top 22.
Their next opponent, South Carolina, isn’t ranked, but the Gamecocks are playing some great football recently, having two consecutive wins against Top 25 teams. Kickoff for the game is at 4:15 p.m. ET, and the game will be on the SEC Network
