Jon Sumrall apologizes to Florida fans after Georgia loss: ‘Clearly not good enough’
The Florida Gators had optimism ahead of today’s contest against the Georgia Bulldogs. Head coach Jon Sumrall knew his team was dealing with injuries, but expected it to show up for the rivalry game. To his dismay, it didn’t.
Florida turned the ball over four times and gained just 48 yards on its longest drive in its 27-8 loss to Georgia. That 48-yard possession followed a Bulldog fumble and resulted in a touchdown, but didn’t happen until the fourth quarter. The Gators were down 24-0 when they finally found the end zone.
After the final whistle, Sumrall took accountability for Florida’s poor performance.
“Clearly not good enough by us today. Really disappointed. Hate it for our football team. I apologize to our fans,” Sumrall said to begin his postgame press conference. “[Today] wasn’t what the Florida Gators standard is and [I] do not shy away from the fact that we have to be a lot better across the board.”
It’d be easy for Sumrall to attribute the Gators’ showing to their injuries, but he refused to do so. He saw how his team played in its win over Texas in Austin despite some of the same ailments. He then swore to Florida fans that he’d get the Gators’ issues sorted out.

“[I’m] grateful for our fanbase. They should be pissed off… I promise you, we’re gonna get this right,” Sumrall vowed. “I commit to giving everything I have for us to freaking get this right… I’m not okay with today.”
Florida (5-3, 3-3 SEC) has had some incredible highs this season, but some equally saddening lows. The Gators can rebound when they welcome the Oklahoma Sooners to Gainesville on Nov. 7 (7:45 p.m. ET, SEC Network).
