Jon Sumrall comments on 9-game SEC schedule: ‘I’m not going to whine and complain’

Jon Sumrall appears genuinely grateful for the opportunity to coach in the Southeastern Conference.
On Wednesday while speaking from the podium at SEC Media Days, Sumrall was asked about the SEC’s move to a 9-game conference schedule, which has caused quite the storm among SEC head coaches. Sumrall, who is entering his first year as a head coach in the SEC after a few seasons coaching Tulane, took a different approach.
“I’m not going to whine and complain about being an SEC head football coach,” he said.
Sumrall has spent 4 seasons as a head coach, first leading Troy in 2022 and 2023 before taking the job at Tulane for the 2024 and 2025 seasons. Across those 4 seasons Sumrall boasts a 43-12 record, and his teams ended in the top 25 in 2022 and 2025. For schools like Troy and Tulane, that’s no small feat.
Florida features considerably more talent than either of Sumrall’s squads at Troy and Tulane and based on this answer he’s ready to line it up and get to work. After all, every team in the conference is going to have to win tough games to earn a CFP berth. He knew what the job was when he signed up for it.
Florida’s schedule in Year 1 of the Jon Sumrall era includes matchups at Auburn, at Texas, at Florida State, vs. Georgia, vs. Ole Miss and vs. Oklahoma.
