Jon Sumrall: ‘I felt really bad’ for Gators’ losing performance vs. Oklahoma

The Florida Gators suffered the worst loss of the Jon Sumrall era (so far) on Saturday night, dropping a 23-7 stinker to visiting Oklahoma. The Sooners beat the Gators with long, sustained drives — owning the time of possession at 37:50 compared to Florida’s 22:10.

The Gators are in a bad spot right now. After starting the season 4-0 with a win over Ole Miss, the Gators have lost 4 of their last 5 games and sit at 3-4 in SEC play.

Sumrall’s postgame comments sounded similar to the postgame comments he made in those previous losses, which is becoming a frustrating consistency for some Gators fans. Sumrall insisted he doesn’t have a lot to say to make Saturday’s loss acceptable, then mentioned he “felt really bad’ for the performance his Gators put on.

‘I don’t have a whole lot of words that are going to make this right,” Sumrall said, via the Orlando Sentinel’s Edgar Thompson. “I felt really bad for that performance we put on.’

Not exactly words of encouragement.

Florida’s woes are widespread. The quarterback position is a major question mark following yet another poor performance by Tramell Jones. He isn’t receiving too much help, though — the Gators offensive line struggled with physicality in the run game and pass protection, allowing 3 sacks while Florida running backs took 25 carries for just 70 yards (2.8 yards per carry).

Next up, Florida is set to face off against a Kentucky team looking to bounce back from a 34-6 loss at Tennessee.
