Jon Sumrall rejects notion that his ‘family’ will be rooting for Auburn in Week 3

Traditionally, there’s no love lost in the SEC when two friends’ or families’ squads are battling on the gridiron. To Jon Sumrall, though, that will be the case this weekend.
Ahead of the Florida Gators‘ Week 3 tilt with the Auburn Tigers, Sumrall was asked if he’d have “extended family” rooting against him on Saturday. The question was logical; Sumrall is a Huntsville, AL native, and his wife attended Auburn. Sumrall, though, was all business in his response.
“If I do, they’re not family to me,” Sumrall said. “There’s ties, but Florida pays my mortgage, you know? Any family that is pulling against us, they ain’t my family… I’m a Florida Gator. Everybody affiliated with me closely is a Florida Gator, or they’re not affiliated with me closely.”
Sumrall’s Gators have looked good in his first two games as head coach. They’ve defeated the Florida Atlantic Owls and Campbell Camels by a combined 96 points (118-24).
The matchup with first-year head coach Alex Golesh‘s Tigers, who are 2-0 with wins over Baylor (17-16) and Southern Miss (43-8), presents a much tougher challenge.
Florida and Auburn face off under the lights at Jordan-Hare Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 19 at 7:00 p.m. E.T. (ESPN).
