Jon Sumrall says Mizzou humbled Florida, explains mindset moving forward: ‘It’s personal’
Jon Sumrall is an intense guy and head coach, and that’s already been on display in Year 1 in Gainesville.
On Saturday, in the leadup to Florida‘s home SEC showdown against South Carolina on SEC Network, the guy in charge of the 16th-ranked team in the country spoke brutally honest words with SEC Network’s Marty Smith about what happened in that Week 5 disaster in Columbia.
What happened was Mizzou took down Florida, 45-17, handing the Gators their first loss of the 2026 season and handing Sumrall his first loss as Florida head coach. It was a humbling experience for everyone involved, as a Gators team that was flying high in September got a rude awakening on the first Saturday of October.
Florida allowed the Tigers to pile up 560 total yards in the blowout on national TV, and now the Gators will look for a swift response on Saturday at The Swamp against the struggling Gamecocks. Sumrall told Smith on Saturday morning exactly how he and his program should approach the whole situation.
“You have to respond to adversity, Marty. You know the old adage, ‘you show me a good loser, and I’ll show you a loser.’ Anytime you get humbled the way we did, it’s personal. We all had to look in the mirror and own it,” Jon Sumrall said. “Our guys showed back up to practice and prepared with a fire about them to get better. We’re a young football team that’s growing each and every day.”
Sumrall’s final point to Smith was that his team still has a lot of room to grow and that was on display during the Mizzou loss.
While Sumrall has his team focused on bouncing back in Week 6 against South Carolina, here is what the Kalshi market is currently saying about Florida’s chances to do just that on Saturday at The Swamp:
