Josh Heupel comments on O-line, QB play vs. Texas: ‘Not good enough’

The Tennessee Volunteers miraculously had a chance to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat vs. the Texas Longhorns. Faizon Brandon’s Hail Mary got swatted to the turf, preserving the win for Texas. Even if Tennessee had converted, the Vols’ head coach knows they didn’t play well enough to win.
Speaking postgame, Josh Heupel called out both his offensive line and quarterback for poor execution against the Longhorns. His comments portray belief that Texas’ 10 sacks aren’t all on one particular position group.
“Up front, not good enough. Quarterback, not good enough. The whole team had a hand in it,” Heupel said. “…O-line has to be better, can be better. [But] there’s times where the quarterback isn’t getting rid of the football.”
Brandon, a true freshman making his first-ever SEC start, fought valiantly on Saturday. He briefly left the game due to injury, but returned to finish with 145 passing yards and a touchdown. He looked rattled at times, missing some open receivers and displaying some inaccuracy against the Longhorns’ ferocious defense. However, his offensive line’s struggles certainly contributed to those issues.
Tennessee (3-1, 0-1 SEC) faces the Auburn Tigers next weekend. Kickoff between the Tigers and Vols at Neyland Stadium on Saturday, Oct. 3 is 3:30 p.m. E.T.
