Reports emerged Tuesday evening claiming the Tennessee Volunteers would be starting George MacIntyre at quarterback against the Arkansas Razorbacks. On Wednesday afternoon, head coach Josh Heupel had an opportunity to confirm that report. He chose not to do so.

During the SEC’s weekly teleconference call, Heupel elaborated on his quarterback dilemma going into Week 6.

“I know there’s going to be questions here on the quarterback… but I’m not going to go into great detail on our plan… as we head to Arkansas,” Heupel said. “I addressed it on Monday. Faizon Brandon was dealing, still dealing with some injury things. We’re working through that.”

“[I’ve] got great trust and belief in both Faizon and George. They’re both here for a reason,” Heupel continued. “They’re tough, resilient guys. They’ve been great teammates and done a lot of positive things out on the field.”

Brandon opened the 2026 season as the Vols’ starting passer. He played well through Tennessee’s first three games, but struggled in the team’s loss to No. 1 Texas. Those woes, which could be injury-related — Brandon was sacked 10 times against the Longhorns — carried into last week’s matchup with Auburn. There, MacIntyre replaced Brandon and completed 80% of his passes (8/10) for 86 yards in his stead. The Volunteers battle the Razorbacks at 4:15 p.m. E.T. on Saturday (SEC Network).
