Josh Heupel’s Tennessee Volunteers ran into a buzzsaw Saturday against top-ranked Georgia. UGA beat Tennessee 41-17.
The Vols entered Saturday looking to give Georgia’s top defense fits; however, things didn’t play out like that. Georgia held Tennessee to just 17 points and under 100 yards rushing in the game.
Tennessee’s defense couldn’t slow down Georgia running back James Cook, as he tied a career-high 3 touchdowns. Quarterback Stetson Bennett also added 2 touchdowns on the day.
Following the Vols loss to Georgia, Josh Heupel spoke to the media.
Josh Heupel: Love the way our team competed, but against a good football team, have to make the plays to play it down to the end. Can't lose the turnover battle, we weren't good enough in the red zone. We know what we're building and we'll continue to fight.

Josh Heupel: "We were a little bit off."
Heupel on Hendon Hooker. Said it could have been a combination of things like feet not set or pressure getting to him.

Josh Heupel on #Vols QB Hendon Hooker: Whether the pressure was real or feeling the pressure from previous plays, we were just off. Had a couple of throws that sailed on him.

Josh Heupel on closing the gap:
"We've got to continue to compete and continue to grow. Our kids aren't scared to walk out on the football field against anybody – neither are our coaches. We've got to continue to grow."
— Eric Cain (@_Cainer) November 14, 2021
#Vols head coach Josh Heupel: Our kids aren't afraid to compete against anybody. We'll continue to recruit, keep competing in these games and we'll end up on the right side.
— Ben McKee (@benmckee14) November 14, 2021
#Vols coach Josh Heupel: That wasn’t our best football tonight. I don’t want to take anything away from Georgia. That’s a really good team in all three phases. Just felt like we could have done more.
— Wes Rucker (@wesrucker247) November 14, 2021
#Vols coach Josh Heupel on Cedric Tillman: He’s a great example for everyone in this program that those who put the most into it get the most out of it. Velus, too.
— Wes Rucker (@wesrucker247) November 14, 2021
Josh Heupel on Ga defense: "The toughest thing is their personnel. They rotate guys in and there is no drop off."
— Eric Cain (@_Cainer) November 14, 2021
Josh Heupel on if he's worried about Tennessee responding to the loss to finish the season: Nah. No doubts in our guys and who they are. Tonight's loss wasn't because of lack of focus or preparation. We just didn't execute. I'll compete with these guys every Saturday.
