The Tennessee Volunteers fully thrust themselves into the College Football Playoff chase by beating the Alabama Crimson Tide 26-10 in Week 7. It would be easy for the Vols to lose focus following their rivalry victory, but Josh Heupel is doing all he can to prevent wandering minds in his locker room.

Heupel spoke on Tennessee’s upcoming matchup with South Carolina on Monday. He talked about the importance of his team recalling its game against the Gamecocks from 2022, when the Vols went to Columbia as the No. 5 team in the nation and suffered a 63-38 loss, before this weekend’s battle.

“Understand the type of environment youโ€™re getting into. Understand the approach of your opponent,” Heupel said. “Youโ€™re stepping into a ring; you better understand your opponent. Be prepared to be your physical, mental and emotional at your peak.”

Tennessee eliminated any chance of a possible four-team CFP berth with its poor showing four years ago. This year’s Volunteer squad doesn’t want to relive past misery, even if Shane Beamer’s bunch is performing much better than it did to open the season.

“[We’re] facing a football team thatโ€™s playing really well,” Heupel stated. “You look at the ability to go on the road… against Florida and come away with the win. [They] played extremely well in all three phases of the football game.”

The Vols and Gamecocks face off at 3:30 p.m. ET on Saturday afternoon (ESPN).
