Josh Heupel updates status of veteran TE Miles Kitselman

Miles Kitselman was not the No. 1 worry on the injury list for Tennessee heading into Week 1. That superlative would go to star cornerback Jermod McCoy.

While there was never much doubt that Kitselman would miss Week 1 in the first place, a torn pectoral muscle that he suffered in March has the tendency to linger. At the SEC’s first teleconference of the season on Wednesday, Josh Heupel was asked if the Vols’ senior TE is ‘100% healthy’ ahead of Saturday’s matchup with Syracuse.

Always nonchalant, Heupel responded with a simple, “yeah, he is.”

Obviously, that’s great news for Tennessee. The Vols are likely to see a lot of action from their tight end room this season, with Kitselman, R-sophomore Ethan Davis and freshmen Da’Saahn Brame and Jack Van Dorselaer all reportedly turning heads in fall camp. Who knows what the true production will be from the room until we see it live on Saturday, but with some struggles in fall camp from the wide receiver corps, it’s a good bet to expect a lot from the most senior member of the TE room.

Kitsleman taking a step as a receiving threat would certainly be of interest to new QB Joey Aguilar, who officially beat out Jake Merklinger and George MacIntyre for the starting role a week ago. The former App State QB arrived in Knoxville late, so his progression as the Vols’ leader is going to be an interesting watch this season.

The Vols kick things off this Saturday against Syracuse at Noon, from Atlanta, Georgia.
