The 24-team College Football Playoff Era is drawing ever closer. Fans who have spoken out in force against the move are about to have it forced upon them. As we near what felt inevitable, some of the sport’s prominent voices are speaking out against the change.
On Thursday, Josh Pate bashed college football’s supposed “leaders” — his characterization — for expanding the CFP. His comments came on ESPN’s Big Day with Peter Schrager.
“It’s [a] pathetic idea. Leadership in college football’s largely void, so, you know, it tracks. It’s not a big shock,” Pate said. “People who watch this sport, we can explain why a fall Saturday is awesome, absent any other outside context. You take for granted that everyone understands that… they don’t.
“There are an alarming number of people… that need a Playoff sticker… for things to have any kind of meaningful implication … [The leaders] really suck at making decisions and they constantly need to be bailed out financially… this is how you do it.”

If approved, the CFP would have 24 teams in the 2027 season, giving us just three full campaigns of a 12-team CFP. The CFP was instituted with just four teams back in the 2014-15 season.
