With Austin Mack and Keelon Russell still battling it out for Alabama‘s starting quarterback role as fall camp looms, all options are being considered … at least by the media.
During his SEC Media Day press conference, Crimson Tide head coach Kalen DeBoer was asked about the potential for the team to employ a 2-QB system this fall, with Mack and Russell each having packages designed for them.
However, the offensive guru quickly shot that possibility down, explaining that he prefers to run with one signal-caller based on how his staff has been able to prepare them throughout this process.
“I really think it’s best done when you have one guy taking the snaps consistently,” DeBoer said. “I think we’ve done a great job to track, push, evaluate and teach these guys.”
DeBoer added that the rest of the team can be drastically impacted by two quarterbacks switching in and out of the game, emphasizing that consistency from that spot is one of its most important traits.
“Ideally, we want to have the same quarterback from start to finish,” DeBoer said. “From a leadership standpoint, it’s more comfortable that way, and guys know what to expect from both the quarterback and the guys around him.”
