Kalen DeBoer details nuance in wanting Alabama offense, defense ‘to kick the other side’s ass’

Kalen DeBoer’s job is a delicate balance.
On one hand, he wants to instill an environment of belief and confidence while pursuing improvement. On the other hand, he wants both the offense and defense to focus on thoroughly dominating the other side of the ball each and every rep.
DeBoer put it more eloquently Wednesday morning following the Crimson Tide’s first of 18 preseason camp practices:
I’ve always thought this was an interesting balance when evaluating quarterbacks, which is especially relevant given Alabama‘s ongoing QB battle between Austin Mack and Keelon Russell. While coaches are wanting to see these quarterbacks take the necessary steps forward, the best way for them to do that may come from the secondary and pass rush being at their best to push and demand more from the offense, and vice versa.
Speaking of, here’s what DeBoer had to say about the Tide’s QB battle on Wednesday:
“I thought they were consistent. Made a couple of explosive plays in there,” DeBoer said. “… Love the demeanor, love their command, the way they’re into it. You can see the belief that the guys have in them.”
