Keelon Russell has performed like one of the best quarterbacks in the SEC this season, but the redshirt freshman has weathered his fair share of struggles on the road.

Russell’s least effective performance of the year came just a few weeks ago against Tennessee. And while the Crimson Tide were able to take home a dominant 45-17 win, Russell threw a pair of interceptions early against Kentucky before reeling it in in the second half.

With its back against the wall, Alabama can’t afford another shaky start from their standout quarterback. Ahead of Saturday’s game against LSU, Crimson Tide head coach Kalen DeBoer was asked what he’s watching for when Russell takes the field against the Tigers.

“He’s got to just have everything tied to his feet. That’s what you want out of quarterbacks: when you get to the back of your drop, whatever that drop is, there’s got to be a clock in your head but it’s usually tied to your feet as you go through your progression,” DeBoer said, via Bama247’s Mike Rodak. “You run these plays over and over, and the concepts over and over. We’ll dress them up and they look different, but you’ve got to tie it to your feet. First read, second read, third read. If you get to the third, and sometimes there’s not a third, go. That’s when he’s got to understand that’s the time to go create with his feet.”

DeBoer continued…

“I think the other part is, he’s had a couple times where he wants to go and then he kind of pulls up and wants to throw right at that line of scrimmage. Those are things he’s really looking at and working at during practice.”

Today’s matchup between Alabama and LSU is set to being shortly on ABC and Disney plus.
