Ty Simpson’s first Alabama start did not go as the Crimson Tide had hoped.

Simpson posted a decent statline of 23-of-43 passing for 254 yards and 2 touchdowns in the box score. Crimson Tide coach Kalen DeBoer, though, wants Simpson to make quicker decisions.

“He has to trust his reads and cut it loose sometimes,” DeBoer said postgame about his starting quarterback. “Just let it fly. He can make the throws. Let it fly. Throw on rhythm, throw on time. There might have been a time or two where they got in his face a little quick. That’s going to happen. That’s football. But just let it fly.

“And just some decision-making there in certain critical moments. That’s the thing he’s going to learn from. He’s given everything he has. I know he’s in the locker room wanting and wishing that there was some things he would have done different. But there are other guys, too. We got to catch the ball for him once in a while. It’s a full team sport. It’s a whole offensive unit that has the move the ball up and down the field. Everyone has to do their part to help the guy out.”

Simpson, in his 4th collegiate season, will have the opportunity to show he can do that against ULM in Week 2 before Alabama faces Wisconsin in Week 3 and Georgia in Week 4.
