After winning the Alabama starting quarterback job this week, Ty Simpson turned in an impressive scrimmage performance on Saturday.

The Crimson Tide held its second scrimmage of fall camp on Saturday in Bryant-Denny Stadium. Afterward, Kalen DeBoer took questions about Simpson and other topics.

“I thought he came out and executed the offense. Just continues to be steady, finds his times to make the plays,” DeBoer told media members. “Today, he actually used his speed again. And that’s something that people will probably underestimate as we go through the year, just with his ability to make plays and keep plays alive.

“I thought he was steady. He was consistent. Looking here, probably a higher completion percentage than what he had last scrimmage, maybe not quite as explosives. I think that’s a tribute to our defense and what they did as well. So good both scrimmages for him, and just continue to make progress. And I think building the team and getting the momentum going when we knew we needed to do it, and that’s allowing us to have three weeks of prep building our team for Florida State.”

Alabama fans are sure to be intrigued by DeBoer’s comment about Simpson’s speed and ability to extend plays (though he flashed that speed in game action prior to DeBoer’s arrival). Though this is Simpson’s 4th season, he’s relatively unfamiliar to many college football fans, having recorded 50 passes and 22 rushes over 16 games in 3 seasons. Simpson will have the attention of the college football world for his first start, the Week 1 trip to Tallahassee to take on Florida State.
