Kalen DeBoer: ‘There is a possibility’ for Alabama to add a Class of 2022 player

The college football recruiting landscape is currently at a crossroads for the 2022 recruiting class after the news that former NFL tight end Dae’Quan Wright is being pursued by LSU.
During his Monday press conference, Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer weighed in on the hot-button topic. Keep in mind, the entire Class of 2022 was ruled eligible by a Colorado district judge — though the NCAA was recently granted a stay in combating that ruling.
“Overall, as a general how that works, Greg Byrne’s communicating with me and us about just what we can and can’t do. There is a possibility out there with someone who was on our roster in the past,” DeBoer said. “But right now, he wouldn’t be able to come in and play. So I can’t control that. I can’t worry about that.”
It would certainly be intriguing to find out which former Class of 2022 Crimson Tide player that DeBoer is referencing.
DeBoer added that this is a widespread discussion being had with programs across the country and he’s placing his trust in AD Greg Byrne to navigate Alabama through the situation.
“We’ve just got to see how things move forward and progress. You just never know in the world we’re in right now what tomorrow might look like. We’ll see as we go,” DeBoer said. “I know there’s a lot of conference and national [people] figuring this thing out. Greg Byrne continues to update with it.”
Alabama begins the 2026 season with a home matchup vs. East Carolina on Sept. 5 (12 p.m. ET/ABC).
