Kalen DeBoer liked what he saw from both Austin Mack and Keelon Russell on Thursday during Alabama‘s second scrimmage of preseason camp.

That doesn’t mean he’s ready to name a starter, though.

“We’ll work through it here this weekend, see where we’re at, and just continue to discuss it as a coaching staff,” DeBoer said in his post-scrimmage press conference.

Overall, it’s been an improvement from week to week as both players look to come out on top in the quarterback battle. While passing and playmaking is part of any evaluation process, DeBoer and his staff are looking at more than that.

“I think they’re clean with the command and calls and getting the line of scrimmage,” Kalen DeBoer said. “I would say this: I think pre-snap, any checks, I felt like they were on it on another level than what they were a week ago, which is what you’d expect. We’ve made a note of that and they’ve improved on that drastically.”

How much separation is there between the two quarterbacks, if any?

“Depends on what you’re looking at,” DeBoer said. “We can go in with either one of them. I feel very comfortable with that. Obviously, we gotta pick one, and we will. We’ll pick one, and we’ll continue to work through that here in the days ahead.”
