Kane Wommack identifies ‘freakiest’ player on Alabama defense
No Alabama recruiting class has ranked worse than fifth in the country since 2010. When you’re adding the best players to your roster year after year, you’re bound to see some unique physical specimens. If Kane Wommack is to be believed, the Crimson Tide have one of those unicorn-type athletes on their 2025 defense.
Wommack, Alabama’s defensive coordinator, couldn’t shower enough praise on linebacker Que Russaw during his Thursday media availability. He told reporters that the redshirt sophomore is a “special talent” in terms of strength, and that his 2024 flashes bode well for his 2025 performance.
“On a team full of freaky people, Qua is the freakiest. He is freaky athletic,” Wommack said. “Qua’s ability to destroy blocks and get off and make plays (is special)… I think he learned a lot last year with the experience he had, and he’s what I would call, has turned himself into, a controlled, aggressive player.”
Wommack specifically noted a play against Auburn as a moment where Russaw displayed his incredible traits. The Tigers pulled their left guard, redshirt freshman Bradyn Joiner, Russaw’s way on a red zone run. It’s safe to say that Joiner wishes Hugh Freeze had called a pass, or any other run, instead.
Russaw tallied 36 tackles, 3 tackles for loss, 1 sack, and 2 interceptions as a redshirt freshman last season. He’s set to handle a much bigger role for the Crimson Tide in 2025. If he shows out, he could find himself playing NFL preseason football, like his former quarterback, this time next year.
