Keelon Russell made his first career road start at Kentucky on Saturday, and things couldn’t have started any worse for the Alabama freshman quarterback.

After throwing a pick-6 on the first possession of the game, Russell followed it up with a fumble on the second drive.

Here’s video of those 2 turnovers:

The interception was an impressive diving interception by defensive end Mi’Quise Humphrey-Grace to give the Wildcats the early lead.

Russell made his first career start last week at home against East Carolina, and he looked very good. He finished that game with 256 passing yards, while also adding another 86 and a touchdown on the ground.

While he entered this game with confidence, this is obviously a huge step up in competition. New Kentucky coach Will Stein has the fans in Lexington extremely optimistic that the team can start to become a contender in the SEC.

For Russell, there are still huge games looming this season at Tennessee and LSU, as well as a home game against Georgia. If Kalen DeBoer and the Crimson Tide are going to have the type of season they want to, then Russell is going to have to be able to lead his team to wins in tough atmospheres.
