Keelon Russell for Heisman? Fans react to otherworldly performance at Mississippi State
The Alabama-Mississippi State matchup was hailed as a potential QB battle of the season. Seeing the way Keelon Russell and Kamario Taylor had played in September, that was a logical assessment. Now that the dust has settled, though, there’s one passer with his head well above the rest.
Russell, for the third straight week, threw three passing touchdowns and ran for a score in the Crimson Tide’s dominant 56-23 victory over the Bulldogs. The young passer, who completed 72.7% of his passes (16/22) and accumulated 301 total yards, has now reached those thresholds (3 times) more often than not (twice) as a starting quarterback.
Russell has thrown for 970 yards, 10 touchdowns and no interceptions in his last three games, all against Power 4 competition. His dominance has made him the current betting favorite for the Heisman Trophy on FanDuel Sportsbook, per 247Sports’ Mike Rodak. Following another incredible showing, fans are buying all of Russell’s stock.
Alabama (5-0, 3-0 SEC) could find itself in the top 5 of the next AP poll. If it does, its showdown with Georgia on Oct. 10 will likely be a top-5 clash. The Bulldogs and Crimson Tide kick off at 7:30 p.m. E.T. (ABC) next weekend.
