New Kentucky Wildcats head coach Will Stein is still hard at work preparing his Oregon offense for their New Year’s Day matchup against Texas Tech in the Orange Bowl, but that isn’t keeping him from his upcoming duties in Lexington once the Ducks’ season is over.

Stein has been slowly but surely filling out his assistant coaching staff over the past several weeks, already making several key hires on both offense and defense ahead of the January transfer portal window.

The offensive guru just added another key piece to the puzzle he’s building at Kentucky, hiring former Arkansas Razorbacks running backs coach Kolby Smith to fill the same role with the Wildcats on Tuesday.

A former standout tailback with Louisville and NFL veteran, Smith has spent the past 13 years coaching at both the FBS and NFL levels with stops at Western Kentucky, his alma mater, Louisville, and the Miami Dolphins along the way.

He spent the previous 2 seasons as the running backs coach at Arkansas and was also promoted to the interim offensive coordinator position by Bobby Petrino after he took over as interim head coach following the firing of Sam Pittman.

Now he’ll be joining Stein’s staff of seasoned assistants in Lexington as they look to turn around a Wildcats’ program that has been languishing in futility for the past several years.
