Kentucky shares iconic touchdown from 1997 Alabama win ahead of Crimson Tide matchup

It’s not often you get a David vs. Goliath matchup amongst SEC teams. When the Alabama Crimson Tide and Kentucky Wildcats face off on the gridiron, though, that feels like the most apt comparison.
Over the past 100 years, Alabama is 34-1-1 against Kentucky in football. Understandably, the Wildcats are not focusing on their 34 losses ahead of Saturday’s game. Instead, they’re leaning heavily into their one triumph, which came in 1997. This morning, UK Sports Network shared the game-winning touchdown from that 40-34 overtime victory, featuring Kentucky broadcaster Tom Leach’s call of the play and the ensuing celebration.
The Wildcats are eager to get the Will Stein Era started on the strongest possible foot. Beating the Crimson Tide on Saturday would accomplish that goal.
Couch, the No. 1 pick of the 1999 NFL Draft, threw for 355 yards and 4 touchdowns to push Kentucky to the winner’s circle. His 3 interceptions are forgotten because of the result, but could serve as a helpful note for Wildcats quarterback Kenny Minchey. Those turnovers are evidence that Couch not only wasn’t perfect, but that he didn’t play scared. Minchey cannot play scared if he wants to repeat Couch’s feat.
