Ole Miss standout running back Kewan Lacy provided a highlight for Rebels fans in the first half of Thursday night’s Fiesta Bowl, but it might have come at a high price.
The standout sophomore appeared to injure his hamstring during his electrifying 73-yard touchdown run early in the second quarter – pulling up as he neared the endzone but still managing to score against Miami. Lacy’s touchdown gave Ole Miss a 7-3 lead, but the Rebels trailed Miami 17-13 at halftime.
Lacy didn’t record another carry after the TD run and finished the first half with just 2 carries for 75 yards. He was spotted on the exercise bicycle on the Ole Miss bench during the second quarter but did not re-enter the game.
“They’re looking at him so we’ll figure it out at halftime,” Ole Miss coach Pete Golding said to ESPN as Ole Miss went into the halftime locker room.
Lacy entered Thursday’s College Football Playoff with the third-most rushing yards in the country at 1,464, and his 23 rushing touchdowns ranked second among all FBS players. The consensus All-American turned in six 100-yard rushing efforts for the Rebels (13-1), including a 224-yard outburst on 31 carries against Florida on Nov. 15.
Lacy signed a lucrative NIL deal to return to Ole Miss for his junior season in the days prior to the Fiesta Bowl instead of potentially hitting the transfer portal. He spent his first season at Mizzou in 2024 before transferring to Oxford.
