Georgia coach Kirby Smart discussed Georgia’s Open Record laws when he visited the state capitol in February, according to a report from DawgNation.com‘s Seth Emerson.

Smart, who served as Alabama’s defensive coordinator from 2008-15 before landing in Athens, says he “doesn’t deserve credit” for the bill, whichย would allow athletics programs in the state of Georgia to wait 90 days to respond to inquiries.

โ€œFirst of all, I shouldnโ€™t get any credit for that,โ€ Smart said. โ€œWhen I went over to the capitol I was asked whatโ€™s the difference in our program and some programs Iโ€™ve been at in the past. One of the things I brought up, thereโ€™s a difference. And that was the extent of my conversation with those guys about that.

โ€œSo for me to get the credit for that is a little bit misleading.โ€

Per the report, the chief of staff to one of the billโ€™s co-sponsors, State Sen. Bill Cowsert, initially told the Macon Telegraph that the bill โ€œcame to light through Kirby Smart at UGA.โ€

Smart declined to comment further on the topic.
