Kirby Smart has promoted competition at quarterback this spring even though Stetson Bennett is coming off of a national championship season.
Georgia has finished 9 practices of the spring, as it gears up for the annual G-Day scrimmage on April 16 in Sanford Stadium.
There’s been talk that Carson Beck has pushed for the starting job, and that other quarterbacks, like Brock Vandagriff and Gunner Stockton are getting meaningful looks during spring practice. But on Tuesday, Smart offered high praise for Bennett.
“He’s playing the best football he’s played since he’s been here,” Smart said. “I want him to continue to get reps so there’s growth.”
About the quarterbacks in general, Smart said he’s seen a lot of growth from Bennett and the primary backups.
“When things break down, he doesnโt have to go make a play like he thinks he has to,” Smart said. “He doesnโt have the snafus that he used to. The other two guys have gotten a lot of work with the 1s and 2s. Itโs amazing to see how far theyโve come. Theyโre both really in their second spring and theyโve come so far.โ
On defense, another veteran Smart is looking for more from is Jalen Carter on the defensive line.
โItโs a matter of can he play with maximum intensity and sustain,” Smart said. “We need him to play more snaps this year. Can he do that? Can he go through offseason workouts and gets to where Travon (Walker) was. Devonte Wyatt was able to play so many snaps because he was in such great shape.โ
