Georgia coach Kirby Smart provided an update on the health status of star safety Richard LeCounte, who is still in the hospital following a serious motorcycle accident on Saturday.

“Obviously thoughts and prayers go out to his family and Richard,” Smart said at his Monday press conference and added that LeCounte was moved from an ICU room to a regular room at the hospital. “That’s a good step, good news. Thoughts and prayers are to his family, he’s got wonderful parents and we’ve been in communication with those guys. They’ve been up here, been able to be with him at this time.”

LeCounte sustained a concussion and a bruise to one of his ribs. The injuries are reportedly “non-life-threatening”, and while it’s not clear how long he will be out, it will be at least “a few weeks” before he can return, according to initial reports.

“It doesn’t matter what kind of players he is, when you get news like that it’s crushing … it was a scary moment,” Smart said. “He’s very fortunate to have his helmet on and be where he is now, according to Ron and the doctors with people who have those kinds of accidents.”

Georgia returns to action this week against Florida in Jacksonville, Florida.
