Kirby Smart raves about Alabama QB Keelon Russell ahead of Week 6 matchup
The Georgia Bulldogs are 2-7 against the Alabama Crimson Tide under Kirby Smart. Those wins — the 2022 College Football Playoff National Championship game and 2025 SEC Championship game — came in contests bigger than this weekend’s regular season showdown.
But that doesn’t mean the Bulldogs won’t have a tough time earning a victory, thanks to the Crimson Tide’s quarterback.
Earlier this week, Smart spoke glowingly about Keelon Russell’s early-season dominance.
“I knew he was an elite player, probably the best quarterback in the country coming out,” Smart told reporters at his weekly press conference. “He kind of… disappears for a year, and reappears, and is just unbelievably savvy, [with] arm strength, pocket awareness. You know, people will make him out to be a runner… he scrambles to throw, scrambles to run. He’s accurate. Smart. Very talented.”\

Russell has thrown for three touchdowns and ran for a fourth score in each of his last three starts. Those appearances were blowout victories vs. the Florida State Seminoles, South Carolina Gamecocks and Mississippi State Bulldogs.
For Georgia to avoid a similar fate, Gunner Stockton will have to show out and exceed Russell’s production, or the Bulldog defense will have to lock up Russell. Based on recent performances, the former feels more feasible than the latter.
Georgia and Alabama play under the lights (7:30 p.m. E.T., ABC) on Saturday night.
