Kirby Smart says he would support SEC ‘breaking away’ from NCAA
As discussions about the future of college football continue to unfold, Georgia coach Kirby Smart isn’t being shy about what he thinks the SEC should do next.
Smart, speaking this week at the SEC spring meetings, said he would support the SEC breaking away from the NCAA if their differences prove to be too much to overcome.
“I’ve been a huge advocate that if we can’t find rules that everybody plays by, then we should play our own,” Smart said. “I’m not afraid of that. I’m not afraid to break away and say that our conference is strong enough … “
Smart’s comments come after Iowa State athletic director Jamie Pollard recently dared the SEC to attempt to breakaway from the NCAA.
“Quit threatening,” Pollard said. “Go do it. But if youโre going to do it, you donโt get to just do it in football and then keep all your other sports with us. No, take them all. See how fun it is.โ
Discussions over topics such as cap enforcement, transfer rules and College Football Playoff format are expected to continue over the next few months.
