Georgia fans likely let out a sigh of relief and simultaneous cheer Friday afternoon when coach Kirby Smart offered the latest positive news about one of their running backs.
Zamir White, a 5-star recruit who is trying to come back from knee injuries the last two seasons, was cleared to practice, according to the coach, ahead of the start of the preseason workouts.
“He’ll be thudded like everyone else,” Smart said. “We’ll go from there. … Zamir is doing well and we’re excited to get him out there.”
Almost exactly a year ago, White suffered a season-ending injury to his left knee on punt coverage in the preseason, and that followed a right knee injury during his final high school season. White enrolled early and participated in limited drills in spring 2018 as he recovered from the first injury.
Bulldog fans have waited anxiously for White to get on the field since he was the No. 1 running back prospect in the country in his recruiting class two cycles ago. He was named to the 2018 U.S. Army All-America Bowl and was the top prospect out of North Carolina. Also a track star in high school, his combination of size (6-feet, 215 pounds) and speed is exciting for Georgia fans to see in action.
White will have the opportunity to continue the storied running back tradition in Athens alongside D’Andre Swift, James Cook and Brian Herrien .
