Kirk Herbstreit calls Texas A&M a ‘dangerous’ team after win at LSU

Kirk Herbstreit had an up-close-and-personal view of Saturday night’s 49-25 smackdown in Baton Rouge.

No. 3 Texas A&M moved to 8-0 on the season with a comprehensive win over No. 20 LSU. The Aggies trailed by 4 points at the halftime break before scoring 35 unanswered points across the third and fourth quarters.

LSU got a garbage-time touchdown on the board in the final minute with backups on the field to make the margin a smidge more respectable. But, in the immediate aftermath, Herbstreit felt the message sent by the Aggies was loud and clear.

“Message sent. This is a dangerous, dangerous football team that appears to be, psychologically, on a collective mission,” Herbstreit told his broadcast partner, Chris Fowler, on the ABC broadcast after the game ended. “It was on display in all 3 phases tonight.”

Herbstreit highlighted Aggie quarterback Marcel Reed, whom he said “provides tremendous stability and leadership.” Reed threw 2 interceptions, but he also totaled 310 yards of offense with 4 scores.

The defense has “moxie,” Herbstreit added. That unit recorded 7 sacks and 11 tackles for loss in the game.

A&M is the only remaining unbeaten team from the SEC. Alabama is the only team left in the league without a conference loss. The Aggies travel to Mizzou on Nov. 8. They host South Carolina a week later. They have a tune-up game against Sanford before ending the regular season in Austin on a Friday night.

Given how broken the Texas team currently looks, there’s a very real chance A&M wins out.

“This wasn’t a fluke,” Herbstreit said. “This team is for real.”
