Kirk Herbstreit had a hot mic moment during ESPN’s broadcast of the North Carolina-TCU game.

As ESPN returned from commercial to start the 4th quarter, Herbstreit could be heard chuckling and saying “they’re bad,” (or possibly “you’re bad”) presumably to his booth colleague Rece Davis. A clip from the broadcast quickly made it to social media.

If Herbstreit is talking about Bill Belichick’s Tar Heels, nobody is going to find fault with him. UNC broke the scoring ice, but TCU scored the next 41 points before the Tar Heels finally answered to make it 41-14.

It has been a long Week 1 for Herbstreit and everyone who covers college football. The slate began with Thursday night games followed by a Friday night showdown between Baylor and Auburn. Saturday’s slate was 1 of the most loaded ever, headlined by marquee matchups of Texas-Ohio State, Alabama-Florida State and LSU-Clemson.

With it being Labor Day Weekend, the action extended to Sunday and Monday. Sunday featured entertaining games from Virginia Tech and South Carolina and then Notre Dame at Miami.

Monday’s game has been a disappointing ending because the Tar Heels appear to be, in fact, quite bad. Herbstreit will probably hear about his hot mic moment after the broadcast, or sooner if he checks social media.
