The first 5 weeks of SEC gridiron action are now in the books, and a group of contenders has begun to emerge as the race to Atlanta starts to heat up.

Surprisingly enough, the 2 best teams from the nation’s deepest conference have arguably been the Ole Miss Rebels and the Texas A&M Aggies.

The Rebels are the highest-ranked SEC team in the AP Poll as of this week, holding down the No. 4 spot after a statement win against the LSU Tigers in Week 5, while the Aggies are right behind them at No. 6.

By just about every metric, Ole Miss and Texas A&M are 2 of the top teams in the nation heading into Week 6, and Kirk Herbstreit agrees, as he had both in his most recent top-5 rankings.

The longtime ESPN analyst and College GameDay host unveiled his updated rankings in a recent episode of the Nonstop podcast, and he has the Rebels locked in at No. 3 and the Aggies rounding things out at No. 5.

Sandwiched between these 2 SEC powers, Herbstreit has the Miami Hurricanes slotted in at No. 4, and he also has a couple of Big 10 contenders at the top of his rankings with the Ohio State Buckeyes at No. 1 and the Oregon Ducks at No. 2.

There’s no question that both Ole Miss and Texas A&M have earned their keep in Herbstreit’s rankings thus far, but they will both have to navigate increasingly perilous schedules moving forward if they want to maintain their standing as the season continues to roll along.
