There’s been plenty of movement on the coaching carousel this season. However, ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit is singling out a Big Ten program for its hire.
After former Iowa State head coach Matt Campbell held his introductory press conference at Penn State, Herbstreit praised it as the best fit amongst all the hires across the nation.
“Of all the hires during this coaching carousel this is the best FIT!” Herbstreit said. “Congrats to Penn State on this hire.”
The 46-year-old Campbell, who replaces James Franklin, is the 17th head coach in the history of the Nittany Lions. He guided the Cyclones to 2 Big 12 championship games during his tenure. Now, Campbell is steadfast in his quest to restore Penn State.
“From this day forward, we’re going to wake up every single day in this football program and we’re going to build championship habits,” Campbell said. “We’re going to do it 1 day at a time. We’re going to do it from the ground up.”
Campbell intends to hold the Nittany Lions accountable, which he believes will eventually result in a rejuvenated program.
“We’re going to do it in a football program that demands toughness. Mental and physical toughness. Demand discipline at every corner. Demand most importantly togetherness. Selflessness and togetherness,” Campbell said. “One team. One program. Unified to continue the great pride and the great tradition of Penn State football.”
Penn State went 6-6 in the regular season and plays Clemson in the Pinstripe Bowl on Dec. 27 (12 p.m. ET/ABC).
