The 2026 college football regular season officially reaches its midway point this weekend, and the first 6 weeks of action have revealed who the true contenders and pretenders are likely to be come playoff time.

Most of the squads everybody expected to be in the mix at the beginning of the season are still going strong, while several other surprise contenders have also punched their way into the upper echelons of the sport as well.

There can only be one top team in the country, though, and ESPN analyst Kirk Herbstreit picked the Miami Hurricanes as his best squad entering Week 6 of the season on College GameDay Saturday morning.

“I think that the best team in college football right now resides in Miami, Florida,” Herbstreit said. “Darian Mensah the quarterback, Damon Wilson, despite all the injuries on that defense. The Canes are only going to get healthier. Right now, I give Miami the nod.”

There’s no denying that Miami has been playing like a true national title contender during the first part of the year, and they are only going to continue to get better as some of their top pieces on defense return from injury, as Herbstreit said.

It will be interesting to see how they fare over the back half of their schedule heading into conference championship weekend and beyond as they look to make it back to the CFP National Championship Game for a second straight season.
