ESPN broadcaster Kirk Herbstreit held his annual “Herbie Awards” on Thursday night and handed out several awards ahead of the start of the college football season.
Among them was LSU All-American Derek Stingley Jr, who Herbstreit pegged as the most exciting player in college football this season. ESPN noted that in 22 games, Stingley has 65 tackles, 6 interceptions and 21 passes defended.
One of the most interesting aspects of the season will be how Stingley performs as he tries to join Tommy Casanova (1969-70-71) as the only three-time first team All-Americas in school history, according to his bio.
Stingley is in line for several national awards, especially on defense.
Coach Ed Orgeron has also considered adding Stingley to the offense for special plays, and that could bolster his Heisman Trophy chances.
