Once upon a time, Florida State vs. Miami was can’t miss TV for college football fans. Even on a Saturday with many AP Top 25 teams on a bye, the rivalry clash between the Seminoles and Hurricanes wasn’t getting much national buzz. ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit, however, had a lot to say about the game during the weekly “Nightcap Recap” his ABC broadcast partner Chris Fowler shares on Instagram.

The post-Week 10 “Nightcap” was a roughly 15-minute video. At about the 6:00 mark, Herbstreit steers the conservation toward FSU, and unloads some harsh criticism on Willie Taggart’s Noles.

โ€œI want to get this off my chest,โ€ Herbstreit said. โ€œIโ€™m done with Florida State. I donโ€™t want to talk about them anymore. I hate the way they represent themselves. Their current roster needs to go back and watch the Bobby Bowden Era. Because it wasnโ€™t about talking trash and fighting. Thatโ€™s all they do. Theyโ€™re the most undisciplined team youโ€™re gonna watch. And theyโ€™re a terrible team. They need to focus more on execution and less on chirping. All they do is chirp.โ€

Fowler responded to Herbstreit, โ€œHere they play the โ€˜Canes. If you canโ€™t get inspired about playing your rival at home. Youโ€™re 4-4, both teams 4-4 and chance to salvageโ€ฆโ€

It prompted an exchange about fighting. Herbstreit wasn’t interested in holding back or sugarcoating:

H: โ€œTheyโ€™re inspired, but they want to fight.โ€

F: โ€œThey wanted to wrestle, yeah.โ€

H: โ€œThey should get into the UFC, get out of football and go fight people. Thatโ€™s all you guys want to do. Fight. It makes no sense to me. I canโ€™t imagine, Willie Taggart whoโ€™s one of the classy, gentlemen, great guy. I canโ€™t imagine what heโ€™s dealing with that culture, trying. Heโ€™s trying to steer the Titanic. Forget just winning games and trying to execute defensively and offensively. Florida State, theyโ€™ll knock a guy out, hit a guy after a 20-yard gain on 3rd and 15, and blow a guy up and just stand over top of him, talking to him. Itโ€™s like, bro, itโ€™s a first down. They have no awareness. Iโ€™m just done talking about them.โ€

Herbstreit wasn’t quite done talking about the Noles. Chris “The Bear” Fallica chimed in that Miami recorded nine sacks in the game. Herbstreit responded.

โ€œTheyโ€™re done. That program is gone.โ€
