Kirk Herbstreit’s top-performing teams during Week 9 of the college football season featured a pair of SEC programs at somewhat different ends of the spectrum.

Tennessee, which is now 8-0 and will be in the Top 4 of the initial College Football Playoff rankings set to be released on Tuesday, had no trouble with Kentucky in a 44-6 win. Jalin Hyatt broke the program’s single season touchdown record with 14 as he hauled in a pair of scoring catches for Hendon Hooker as part of a 5-catch, 13-yard evening. The Vols face Georgia on Saturday in Athens in arguably the biggest game of the college football season and the first time since 1983 a pair of top 5 teams have met between the hedges.

Missouri also made Herbstreit’s list, and while Eli Drinkwitz’s program isn’t at the bottom of the SEC rankings, it squared off at nationally-ranked South Carolina with its bowl hopes slipping away as Kentucky, Tennessee, and Arkansas remain on the schedule. The Tigers, though, sprung the upset, winning 23-10 to even their record at 4-4 and now needing to at least split their remaining games to secure a postseason berth.
