As No. 15 Tennessee gets set to tussle with visiting No. 6 Georgia in Week 3, ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit reflected on the state of the Volunteers since Josh Heupel has been at the helm.
Heupel has helped revitalize Tennessee since taking over in 2021. Heupel is 0-4 against Georgia, but overall, Herbstreit raves about the culture shift in the last few seasons by the Volunteers. He notes that Tennessee was 78-82 in the 13 seasons prior to Heupel’s arrival.
“It’s incredible to think how far this program has come…Sanctions and issues off the field. This culture has cleaned up. Since he’s been in town, they’re 39-15. Averaging 9 wins a year. This guy is doing it and he’s doing it the right way,” Herbstreit said. “I think it gives this team internally a belief that this is the year that they can line up face to face and take down Georgia. We’ll see if they can. They think they can.”
Heupel has guided Tennessee to bowl eligibility every season and in 2024, the Vols reached the College Football Playoff. We’ll see if Tennessee can finally break through against Georgia.
Georgia leads the all-time series 29-23-2 and has an 8-game winning streak against Tennessee. Georgia at Tennessee is slated for a 3:30 p.m. ET kickoff (ABC).
