Kirk Herbstreit reveals his top 5 teams following Week 7

Kirk Herbstreit has a new No. 1 in his top 5. The ESPN analyst is going with the Indiana Hoosiers in the top spot.
On his Nonstop podcast, Herbstreit recalled how he had trouble taking Curt Cignetti’s Hoosiers seriously. Indiana’s win over Oregon, however, changed that.
“I’ve been waiting on Indiana. I have relatives that are IU alums that hate me because I’ve not given Indiana enough love,” Herbstreit said. “I think I, like a lot of people, (I) just thought, ‘Wow, Cignetti’s doing a good job.’
“They didn’t beat one team with above .500 record a year ago. Not one team. And the two that they played, they lost. So I just thought they were a cute story.”
After Week 7, Herbstreit is a believer in Cignetti’s team.
“What he’s doing there at Indiana is great. And then they go to Eugene. They did more in 60 minutes to change my mind than they’ve done the previous year and a half,” Herbstreit said. “That is not easy to do and the way they did it. When you back up Illinois and now going to Oregon, I think I have no problem putting them right now at the No. 1 team in the country. It’s just being real.”
After Indiana, Herbstreit has No. 2 Ohio State, No. 3 Miami, No. 4 Texas A&M and No. 5 Texas Tech. Herbstreit acknowledged he could have included Alabama, but felt stronger about the Aggies and Red Raiders as top-5 teams.
“I could have Bama up there, but it’s just for this week. It’s this week,” Herbstreit told co-host Joey Galloway. “Bama beats Tennessee, you know… But you got to acknowledge what Texas Tech has done. Meanwhile, A&M’s the quietest top-5 team that I’ve ever seen. Nobody is talking about Marcel Reed and A&M.”
The Aggies will look to “quietly” stay undefeated as it takes on Arkansas in Week 8.
