On Saturday afternoon, college football fans were treated to an interesting second-half QB matchup in a game between the Chicago Bears and Buffalo Bills.

That’s because former Georgia QBs Justin Fields (Bears) and Jake Fromm (Bills) led their respective squads for most of the second half of the game.

Naturally, that prompted many fans to weigh in on the matchup on social media. But, a tweet from Pro Football Focus drew the ire of ESPN analyst Kirk Herbstreit and others.

The tweet in question can be seen below:

As Herbstreit and Barrett Sallee of CBS Sports point out below, Fromm was coming off a season in which the Bulldogs went to overtime in the College Football Playoff National Championship Game. Thus, it was always unlikely he was going to be unseated by Fields:

Obviously, Fields went on to become a star at Ohio State and developed into a first-round NFL Draft pick. But, as Herbie points out, it’s possible for Fields to be a star and for Georgia coach Kirby Smart’s decision to stick with Fromm to be the right one.

We’ll see if this narrative continues to haunt Smart as Fields’ NFL career gets started. So far, Fields looks good in preseason action for the Bears.
