Kirk Herbstreit slammed the widespread narrative that there’s a bias toward the SEC within ESPN and other college football outlets during an appearance on the Ryen Russillo Show earlier this week, calling it “bullshit.”
The longtime ESPN analyst highlighted how the coaches poll, the AP Poll, and the CFP rankings all regularly have SEC teams slotted higher than other conferences. He also noted that he was a captain at Ohio State and would love to promote the Big 10 over the SEC.
“They all must be guilty of SEC bias,” Herbstreit said. “You don’t think I want to promote the Big Ten? You think it makes me happy to sit there and promote good teams? I’d love the SEC to have 3 teams in the Top 25 and the Big Ten to have 8. That would make me happy. But you go by what you watch.”
Added Herbstreit: “It’s such bullshit.”
The AP Poll, CFB rankings, and coaches poll all have 9 SEC teams ranked in the top 25 this week, and each poll has the same 9 teams. There seems to be a consensus that these are 9 of the top 25 teams in college football, yet some college football fans would tell you this was due to the SEC bias.
As Herbstreit noted, the coaches competing on the field believe the SEC has 9 of the top 25 teams in the country, and so does the NFL in April when it comes time for teams to draft new players onto their teams.
