Up until Saturday, Lane Kiffin had consigned himself to taking in the bowl season from his couch in Baton Rouge.

But the new LSU coach did venture with his new program to Houston to watch the Tigers take on No. 21 Houston in the Texas Bowl.

Kiffin, wearing a brown leather jacket and no visible LSU insignia, was spotted on the sidelines at NRG Stadium before the game with LSU athletic director Verge Ausberry. He later posted his view on his X account.

Kiffin was infamously hired by LSU on Nov. 30 to replace the fired Brian Kelly. The 50-year-old Kiffin chose to depart Ole Miss after 6 seasons and with the Rebels on the doorstep of their first College Football Playoff appearance – setting off a firestorm of criticism in Oxford and beyond.

Kiffin signed a 7-year, $91 million deal with LSU that also paid him what his incentive bonuses would have been had he remained at Ole Miss through its CFP run. That tab so far has totaled $400,000 – with a $150,000 bonus for Ole Miss earning the CFP bid and then for the Rebels advancing to the CFP quarterfinals.

Ole Miss takes on Georgia in the Sugar Bowl on New Year’s Day (8 pm ET, ESPN) in New Orleans.
