Lane Kiffin is one of the few active coaches who know what it’s like to coach in the NFL and in college. With Urban Meyer in the news this week as one of the other active coaches who fit into that category, Kiffin was asked about the differences between the 2 levels.
But there are others like Pete Carroll, Herman Edwards, Jim Harbaugh, Nick Saban, and even Bill O’Brien with that experience, and Ed Orgeron, Kirby Smart, Steve Sarkisian and others have done it on an assistant level.
Kiffin made an appearance on The Jboy Show, and explained it from his perspective.
“I think it’s different dealing with the players, what you see over time is that you can’t be quite as strict maybe, you got to communicate more with the players, and you’ve heard that whether it’s Saban with Miami or Tom Coughlin a long time ago with the Giants,” Kiffin said. “You see that more, ‘OK, let’s work with the players’ versus ‘This is the way we’re doing it no matter what.'”
