Lane Kiffin jokes about $500,000 savings after Ole Miss avoids field storming fine vs. LSU
Lane Kiffin is a one-of-a-kind person. The Ole Miss head coach is a media member’s dream when it comes to good quotes, and only added to his legacy in that respect following the Rebels’ 24-19 win versus LSU in Week 5.
In his postgame TV media hit, Kiffin made a joke about talking with his daughter’s boyfriend, Tiger linebacker Whit Weeks. Then, in his ensuing press conference, he complimented LSU’s defense (kind of?) while reflecting on the Rebels’ fanbase not storming the field after the clock expired.
This offseason, the SEC adjusted its field-storming policy. Programs are fined $500,000 if their fans storm the field or court. In SEC games, the proceeds go to the opposing team.
Brian Kelly’s defense entered Saturday’s game allowing a paltry 9.3 points per game in route to a 4-0 start. Ole Miss only scored 24 points, but recorded 480 total yards and 28 first downs against that unit. The Rebels also converted on 8-of-16 (50%) 3rd-down attempts. Had they not got in their own way with 14 penalties and a pair of turnovers, they could have lit up the scoreboard.
Ole Miss (5-0, 3-0 SEC) goes on bye next week before welcoming Washington State to Oxford on Oct. 11. Kickoff for that game is set for 12:45 p.m. E.T. (SEC Network).
