New Ole Miss coach Pete Golding earned his first College Football Playoff victory Saturday night when the Rebels downed Tulane 41-10 in his debut effort as a head coach.
The victory, which also came in Ole Miss’ first-ever CFP appearance, was particularly impressive given the tumultuous 3 weeks Golding has navigated the Rebels through since former coach Lane Kiffin infamously bolted to take the open LSU job.
Kiffin took to social media on Saturday night after the Rebels’ victory to congratulate Golding and his former players on their win:
Kiffin coached at Ole Miss for 6 seasons, going 55-19 overall and 32-17 in SEC play. In his 14-year collegiate coaching career at Tennessee, USC, Florida Atlantic and Ole Miss, Kiffin’s overall record is 116-54.
Kiffin also earned a significant financial benefit from Ole Miss’ CFP participation, though not from his old bosses in Oxford. The coach, who signed a 7-year, $91 million deal to coach the Tigers, negotiated into that LSU contract that he earn the bonuses he was going to pocket should he have stayed in Oxford.
That tab is up to $400,000 – with a $150,000 bonus for Ole Miss making the CFP field and then $250,000 for the Rebels winning and advancing to the CFP quarterfinals.
