The Rutgers job has been the most interesting opening of this coaching carousel cycle. Since the Scarlet Knights fired Chris Ash in late September, they’ve talked with several coaches, most notably former Rutgers coach Greg Schiano.
But the school and Schiano couldn’t agree to terms of the deal after he was reportedly offered an eight-year $32 million contract. However, the Associated Press reported that a deal with Schiano is not completely dead.
“I think there is a chance of getting it done,” the source said.
Former Rutgers player Eric LeGrand wrote on NJ.com that it could happen.
“I still believe that he will walk onto that football field next year as our head coach,” he wrote.
Though former Tennessee coach Butch Jones reportedly pulled his name from consideration, he’s on the list of possible candidates from a betting perspective from Sportsline.
Former Arkansas coach Bret Bielema, now the New England Patriots defensive line coach, and current Mississippi State coach Joe Moorhead is also on the list, though at longer odds than even Jones at +800.
Michigan linebackers coach Anthony Campanile is the odds-on leader.
Who will be the next head football coach at Rutgers?
Anthony Campanile +250
Jeff Hafley +300
Jedd Fisch +500
Nunzio Campanile +600
Butch Jones +800
Bret Bielema +1000
Joe Moorhead +1200
Greg Schiano +1500Via @SportsLine Oddsmakers
