LSU has named Frank Wilson as the interim head coach heading into Week 10 after firing Brian Kelly. The 51-year-old Louisiana native was the associate head coach and running backs coach prior to this promotion.

This is Wilson’s second stint at LSU. He was also LSU’s associate head coach and running backs coach from 2010-15 prior to head coaching jobs at UTSA (2010-2015) and McNeese State (2020-2021). Legendary former LSU running Leonard Fournette, who played for Wilson, had a touching social media post on Monday in praise of the Tigers’ interim choice.

“Good things happen to good people. If no one else deserve it you do,” Fournette said. “Just like on this picture when you decided to take the head coaching job at UTSA. I’ll always believe in you.”

The eventual NFL player thrived at LSU under Wilson, with his best season in 2015 when he ran for1,953 yards and 22 touchdowns en route to becoming a consensus All-American. Fournette went on to play for the Jacksonville Jaguars, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and Buffalo Bills from 2017-2023. The 30-year-old Fournette is currently not on an NFL roster.

Wilson has a bye week right now and will make his debut as LSU’s head coach against host No. 4 Alabama on Nov. 8 (7:30 p.m. ET/ABC).
