If you watched LSU’s win over Sam Houston State, you undoubtedly saw Leonard Fournette plunge into the end zone for his first career score, striking a Heisman pose in celebration. You probably also saw Les Miles get in the freshman’s ear as he came back to the sideline.
On Monday, Miles shared his thoughts on his prized freshman’s statue pose, mixing in some support along with his admonishment of Fournette.
“I think it’s a little premature to launch a Heisman candidacy. I think that ne needs to realize too that this is team. It has nothing to do with a personal liberty,” Miles told reporters.
The coach went on, speaking on the amount of effort from all 11 men on the field that it takes to score.
“There’s a lot of guys blocking for that run. A lot of effort and energy to help that man score that touchdown, so we’ll make that point,” Miles said. “He needs to realize that things like that happen with a well-designed play and the effort and energy of his teammates.”
Even though he wasn’t thrilled with Fournette’s pose, Miles went on to say that that kind of attitude isn’t always a negative thing.
“I’d much rather have an enthusiastic, well-felt guy with energy. Maybe he’s a little full of himself, but that’s not all bad yet,” Miles said.
Miles and the entire offense deserve plenty of credit for the play design and execution. Fournette can have his Heisman dreams, but he’ll have to keep executing as well if he wants to become just the second LSU player ever to take home the sport’s most prestigious award.
